Invisalign FAQ

Invisalign Frequently Asked Questions

Curious about invisalign? We've answered The most common questions.

If you are new to Invisalign, you might have more than a few questions about how it works and whether or not it is the right option for you. We've put together informative information and answers to some of the most common Invisalign FAQs!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system of invisible aligners, made out of a special type of plastic. These look similar to plastic retainers or even the trays used in teeth whitening systems. Each set of trays is made specifically for you, to move your teeth in the way prescribed by your orthodontist.

How does the Invisalign treatment work?

Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, include no metal and are custom made for your teeth. They work in a series of trays that gradually shift your teeth into place. Each tray is manufactured so that the teeth are slightly straighter than the previous tray. Your teeth will typically move up to 0.25 mm per tray

Is Invisalign painful?

Most patients who have opted for the treatment report mild pressure during the first few days of using each Invisalign tray. However, Invisalign is made of a very smooth material contoured specifically to your teeth, so patients only feel minor discomfort at the beginning of treatment.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost of Invisalign treatment varies from patient to patient. Visit our Invisalign Cost page for more information about costs involved.

What are Invisalign aligners made of?

Aligners are made from strong, medical grade thermoplastic material developed specially for the Invisalign System. This material is FDA cleared and BPA free, which means they’re safe for your mouth.

Is there an age limit for Invisalign?

There is no age limit for Invisalign patients. At Kahan Orthodontics, we believe that Invisalign is an effective treatment option for those adults, teens and children looking to improve their smile.

How long does Invisalign take?

One of the common misconceptions about Invisalign is that it takes much longer than braces to get your teeth straight. The average adult needs about twelve months for a treatment. Teen patients sometimes have longer, sometimes shorter treatments. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Kahan to give you a good idea of how long your treatment might take.

How do I know if Invisalign is right for me?

There are very few patients for whom Invisalign is not a good option. In some circumstances, braces are still the best choice to correct a misalignment, but Invisalign has advanced to the point that it is now capable of handling a wide variety of issues with ease. Dr. Kahan will examine your specific situation and tell you whether or not you are a good candidate for Invisalign.

Are crowns a factor in Invisalign treatment?

Crowns (tooth caps) are usually not a factor in Invisalign treatment. However, sometimes small tooth-colored composites called "attachments" are bonded onto teeth to help achieve certain movements and are more difficult to bond on crowns than teeth. In these cases, the location of crowns must be carefully evaluated.

Can Invisalign Close Gaps?

Yes. Spaces between teeth are generally easy to close with Invisalign. Consult with Dr. Kahan at an appointment to determine whether Invisalign is suitable for you.

Are there any restrictions on what I can eat while in treatment?

None! Invisalign clear aligners are removable, so there are no food restrictions at all (hello popcorn!). With traditional wires and brackets, there’s a long list of foods you unfortunately can’t enjoy because they can damage or get stuck in your braces.

Will Invisalign treatment still work if I only wear my aligners while I sleep?

You need to wear your Invisalign aligners 20 to 22 hours a day to get the results you want.
